The experience
Starting from the coast of the Beagle Channel, the trek to Mount Susana takes us to the summit of a mountain in the heart of the Andes. From there, we will enjoy some of the best views of the city of Ushuaia, the Beagle Channel, and the surrounding mountain ranges, both on the Argentine side of the island and toward the Chilean side.
From the first meters of the trail, we enter the native forest, where we will discover different plant species that are characteristic of this environment, such as lenga trees, winter’s bark, calafate bushes, orchids, and many others. At the same time, we begin the gradual ascent that will lead us toward the summit.
After just over an hour of uphill hiking, we reach the first viewpoint. As we get closer to the higher mountain area, we begin to notice how the trees slowly change, becoming shorter and more wind-shaped. Here, we can enjoy the first great views offered by this mountain and take a short break before starting the final stretch to the summit.
The trail leading to the summit is above the tree line. Along this section, we are accompanied by small plants and rocks covered with lichens of different colors, typical of mountain environments. This final part requires a greater effort, but the reward upon reaching the top makes it truly worthwhile.
The summit offers an exceptional perspective: we can observe the different mountain ranges that form part of the Andes, the impressive Beagle Channel with its islands and bays, and the city of Ushuaia resting along the coast at the foot of the Martial Mountains.
After taking in the wonderful views and enjoying a delicious box lunch, we begin our return to the base, with the joy and satisfaction of having reached a summit and spent a day in full contact with nature.
