Tempanos Lagoon and Vinciguerra Glacier – Trekking Below Zero

The experience

Venture into the Fuegian mountains on a trek to Laguna de los Témpanos and Vinciguerra Glacier. Designed for those who enjoy challenging hikes, this experience explores the rugged landscapes surrounding Ushuaia, through valleys, forests and peaks transformed by winter.

We begin by crossing the Andorra Valley, following a trail through peat bogs and waterways surrounded by mountains. During the winter season, snow and ice may cover these environments, revealing a different side of this corner of Tierra del Fuego.

We then enter the native forest and begin to climb. The ascent combines slopes and uneven terrain, with breaks to catch our breath, appreciate the surroundings and learn about Fuegian nature with our guide. As we progress, the valley falls away behind us and the landscape becomes increasingly mountainous.

Above the treeline, the views open up to reveal an alpine landscape. Here, we tackle one of the most demanding sections of the day: the final climb towards Laguna de los Témpanos, which may be frozen and covered in snow during winter.

Upon arrival, we pause to admire the scenery and Vinciguerra Glacier, nestled between the mountains on the far side of the lake. If terrain and weather conditions allow, we continue towards the area near its base for a closer look at its shapes and colours.

We find a suitable place to rest and enjoy our packed lunch, surrounded by the vast mountain landscape. After recharging and taking photographs, we begin our descent along the same trail, returning through the forest and valley.

This is a physically demanding trek involving steep slopes and several hours of walking. The route and approach to the glacier depend on conditions on the day and the guide’s assessment. Walking on the glacier or entering ice caves is not guaranteed.
