The experience

We depart from your accommodation in search of one of Ushuaia’s most impressive and challenging adventures. This trek takes us through some of Tierra del Fuego’s most representative landscapes, combining valleys, peat bogs, native forest, glacial lagoons, and high-mountain scenery.

During the first kilometers, we cross the Tierra Mayor Valley and the Esmeralda River Valley, surrounded by mountains, meltwater rivers, peat bogs, and Fuegian forests. After approximately 5 km of hiking, we arrive at the magnificent Laguna Esmeralda, one of Ushuaia’s most iconic landscapes. There, we take a few minutes to admire its incredible turquoise-green color, rest, and recover our energy before beginning the most demanding part of the route.

After walking around the lagoon and leaving behind the last section of forest, we begin the ascent into a high-mountain environment. As we gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly impressive: the views open up, the terrain becomes more challenging, and we begin to appreciate the magnitude of the natural surroundings. Our next goal is to reach the Balconies of Ojo del Albino, an extraordinary panoramic viewpoint from where we can see Laguna Esmeralda from above and the entire trail we have already covered.

From there, we face the final and most demanding section of the experience, which brings us closer to the imposing Ojo del Albino Glacier. The effort is greatly rewarded when we reach this unique setting, surrounded by ice, rock, mountains, and silence. We take some time to rest, contemplate the landscape, and enjoy our box lunch with hot drinks before beginning the return along the same trail.

As this is a high-difficulty activity, good physical condition, previous trekking experience, and proper mountain equipment are required. Progress to the different points of the route is always subject to weather, terrain conditions, and the guide’s safety criteria, prioritizing the group’s well-being at all times.
