When you think of safe, even and lasting snow, Ushuaia comes first. The reason? A unique combination of sea, mountain range and latitude that creates cold winters without extremes and with frequent snowfall. Translation for the traveler: more chances of finding good snow on your trip to the end of the world, whether to ski, try snow activities or simply get to know it for the first time.

The key is in geography (and the sea)

Ushuaia is at sea level and surrounded by water. That makes winter cold, but without peak heat that melts the snow or extreme cold that ruins it. In simple terms: snow melts and freezes less suddenly, which is why it remains more stable and of good quality day by day.

Unlike other places, the Fuegian mountain range runs very close to the sea and in a West-East direction. The humid winds coming from the Pacific collide quickly with the mountains and leave snow even at low altitudes. Furthermore, in the southern hemisphere, south-facing slopes receive less sun in winter, which prolongs the cold on the ground and helps keep the snow at the same elevations.

Fact that adds up: Ushuaia registers one of the lowest annual thermal amplitudes in the country (≈ 8.3 °C annually and 4° daily). That stability is another reason why snow stays even and reliable longer.

Little winter light and low sun: snow that lasts

At 54° South, winter brings shorter days and a very low sun above the horizon. With less direct radiation, snow melts less due to insolation and preserves its texture better throughout the week.

Key fact: Near the June solstice, Ushuaia has around 7 hours of light per day.

What is the snow like in Ushuaia?

Ushuaia has a maritime snow regime (influenced by the ocean). What does it mean for you, without technicalities? Frequent snowfalls and a more compact and even coat that tends to maintain firmness as the days go by. Unlike more continental climates—where the snow can become very dry and fragile—here it tends to feel cohesive, with good “grip” and rapid recovery after each snowfall.

Long season and experiences for everyone

Due to the combination of latitude, sea and mountain range, winter in Ushuaia delivers a lot: usually from the end of June to the end of September, and sometimes it extends to October depending on the year. It is one of the longest seasons in Argentina.
In the mountains, the local center Cerro Castor accompanies with well-maintained infrastructure and trails; and, very close to the city, the valleys and forests allow snowshoes, cross-country skiing, dog sledding, snowmobiles and ass skating, as well as short outings to touch and play with the snow. All without chasing height.

When is it convenient to come?

End of June and July: new snow and a very wintery atmosphere.

August: is usually the most stable period.

September (and sometimes October): somewhat longer days towards the end of the season.
