The experience
We take you along one of the most impressive trails in Ushuaia to discover the magnificent Laguna Esmeralda, one of the most sought-after landscapes in Tierra del Fuego. This approximately 10 km round-trip trek offers a complete nature experience, crossing some of the island’s most representative environments: native Fuegian forest, reddish peat bogs, meltwater rivers, open valleys, and the ever-present scenery of the imposing Fuegian Andes.
Along the way, we enter a unique natural environment where every section of the trail reveals a different postcard-like view. We walk among lenga and ñire trees, cross wetland areas typical of the peat bogs, and enjoy the silence of the forest, accompanied by the sound of water and mountain winds. In winter, the snow transforms the landscape into a magical scene; in summer, the colors of the valley and Fuegian vegetation make the experience equally unforgettable.
We will also have the chance to observe beaver dams and learn about the history of the beaver, a species introduced to the island, as well as its current impact on the native ecosystem. Throughout the hike, we may also spot different birds typical of these environments, such as upland geese, caracaras, Magellanic woodpeckers, condors, and other species that inhabit the forests and mountains of Tierra del Fuego.
Finally, after a pleasant hike, we arrive at the incredible Laguna Esmeralda. Its characteristic turquoise-green color, the result of its glacial origin, offers one of the most memorable views at the End of the World. There, we take a break to enjoy the scenery, walk along the shore, take photos, and recover our energy with a delicious picnic by the lagoon. After this unique moment, we begin our return along the same trail back to the city of Ushuaia.
