The experience
We depart from Ushuaia heading north along National Route N° 3, crossing the great Fuegian valleys, surrounded by mountains, snow-covered forests, peat bogs, and winter centers. Along the way, we will make a panoramic stop to enjoy the winter landscape and capture these unique views in photos.
Before taking Provincial Route J, we visit Haruwen, a winter center with a very special proposal. There, we will discover its motorcycle museum, with unique pieces and details, as well as a Fuegian gin distillery — a different experience that combines history, local production, and the spirit of the End of the World.
Then we continue along Provincial Route J, enjoying a beautiful forest road that, during winter, turns into a snow-covered landscape. Along this section, we will observe a beaver dam, where we will learn about the impact of beavers on the Fuegian environment, and we will also pass by Laguna Victoria, a peaceful spot surrounded by forest and mountains. Finally, we continue until we reach the coast of the Beagle Channel.
Once there, we begin to enjoy beautiful views of the channel and observe the marine production areas of the region. These include mussel farming buoys, king crab traps, and active fishing boats. Across the Beagle Channel, in front of us, we will also be able to see Puerto Williams, a Chilean town located on Navarino Island.
Continuing along the coastal road, locally known as the “King Crab Route,” we gradually approach the small village of Puerto Almanza. In winter, this route combines the marine landscape of the Beagle Channel with the snowy surroundings of the Fuegian mountains and forests. There, we will walk along its only street, where a few families live mainly from the sea.
With an atmosphere that recalls Ushuaia from a century ago, this village combines a marine, Andean, and forest environment, along with artisanal fishing production where king crab stands out — a reddish crustacean known in the region as “red gold.”
Finally, after walking through the village, we visit a fisherman’s house to enjoy a delicious lunch with fresh local products. It will be the perfect moment to share local flavors, talk about the experience, and enjoy the tranquility of this unique corner of Tierra del Fuego before returning to the city of Ushuaia.
