The experience

We depart from the port of Ushuaia aboard a catamaran, initially sailing across the wide bay of Ushuaia. From the sea, we will enjoy a privileged view of the port, the city, and the mountains that surround it. After crossing the bay, we enter the Beagle Channel, which near Ushuaia is home to several islands and islets where a great variety of native wildlife can be found.

One of our first stops will be Bird Island, home to cormorants, seabirds whose appearance may remind us of penguins and which build their guano nests on the rocky islands of the channel. We continue sailing east until we reach Sea Lion Island, where we can observe a colony of South American sea lions that live in the Beagle Channel all year round. These islands are also home to a wide variety of seabirds, such as albatrosses, petrels, ducks, oystercatchers, and seagulls. With a bit of luck, we may also be surprised by a marine mammal passing through, such as whales, seals, or porpoises.

After enjoying the wild and natural environment of the Beagle Channel, we reach the icon of this navigation and one of the symbols of the city: the famous Les Éclaireurs Lighthouse. We stay there for a while to take photos, contemplate the landscape, and truly feel that we are at the End of the World.

Leaving the lighthouse behind, we begin the longest stretch of navigation toward the Atlantic, enjoying wonderful landscapes along the way. During this part of the journey, you can have a hot drink at the boat’s bar, relax, and continue admiring the immensity of the Beagle Channel until we reach Martillo Island. There, we stop in front of the island, without disembarking, to observe the colonies of Magellanic and Gentoo penguins that choose this place year after year for breeding, raising their chicks, and molting their feathers.

After enjoying this unforgettable encounter with the penguins, we begin our return to Ushuaia along the Fuegian coast, where we can continue admiring the unique combination of the Andes, the forest, and the sea.

Note: at the beginning and end of the season, the number of penguins observed may be lower.
