The experience
We depart from Ushuaia and travel through some of Tierra del Fuego’s most impressive winter landscapes. National Route Nº3 takes us through vast valleys surrounded by snow-covered mountains, forests, and winter centers, offering a completely different perspective of the island.
We then take Provincial Route J, a scenic road winding through ancient forests until reaching the coast of the Beagle Channel. As we approach Puerto Almanza, the landscape combines sea, snowy mountains, and sub-Antarctic forest.
Upon arriving in Puerto Almanza, one of Argentina’s southernmost fishing settlements, we discover a way of life closely connected to the sea. Much of the region’s artisanal fishing activity takes place here, including king crab, mussels, and other products characteristic of the Beagle Channel.
At around 1:00 PM, we enjoy a complete lunch in a warm and welcoming setting surrounded by the landscapes of the End of the World.
Then comes one of the highlights of the day. At 3:00 PM, we begin our navigation from Almanza towards Martillo Island.
During winter, the stars of the experience are the Gentoo Penguins, a species that remains in the area throughout the year. From our boat, we can observe them in their natural habitat, approaching the island to enjoy the sighting and learn about this remarkable colony that inhabits the Beagle Channel even during the coldest months.
After the navigation, we begin our return journey to Ushuaia, arriving at approximately 6:00 PM, after a full day combining snow, gastronomy, navigation, and wildlife in one of the most remote corners of Tierra del Fuego.
