Trekking at the End of the World: Discover the unmissable hikes in Ushuaia!

Walking trails, exploring forests, reaching panoramic viewpoints, visiting lagoons and glaciers, observing the native fauna and flora, and walking along the sea coast... are just some of the wonderful experiences that hiking offers in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world.

Located in Andean Patagonia, Ushuaia is surrounded by mountains, valleys, forests and the Beagle Channel, making it an ideal destination for nature and trekking lovers. If you are planning your next adventure to the end of the world, here are 5 trails that you cannot miss. Meet them below!

Emerald Lagoon

The trail to Laguna Esmeralda is one of the most popular and spectacular in Ushuaia, especially if we take into account the relationship between the difficulty and the views it offers. Without a doubt, this lagoon is one of the most visited, both by tourists and locals, thanks to its impressive beauty.

The route is just under 5 kilometers one way and takes approximately 2 hours. The path does not present great demands, although some slopes can be somewhat steep, and on rainy days, the path can be quite muddy, especially at the beginning.

Along the route, you will cross the native Fuegian forest, cross peat bogs and walk along the banks of the Arroyo Esmeralda, with views of dams built by beavers. The effort will be worth it when you reach the lagoon, where you will be surprised by its intense green color, surrounded by a spectacular mountain landscape.

Ojo del Albino Glacier

To get to the Ojo del Albino Glacier, you will first have to hike the trail to Laguna Esmeralda, but instead of returning, you will continue about 2.5 more kilometers through more challenging terrain. This additional stretch includes steep slopes that require a little more effort, but the landscape you will find at the end well justifies it.

The glacier and its frontal lagoon, surrounded by imposing mountains, offer a stunning view, ideal for photography lovers. From this high point, you will also be able to see a panoramic view of the Fuegian mountain range and the Laguna Esmeralda from above, a spectacle that you cannot miss, without a doubt one of the must-see hikes in Ushuaia.

Vinciguerra Glacier and Laguna de los Témpanos

This is one of the most exciting treks for adventurers. The total route is more than 12 kilometers, with a gradient of 600 meters, reaching 1,000 meters above sea level. Due to its steep slopes and demanding terrain, it is recommended to have good physical preparation before embarking on this challenge.

What stands out most about this walk is the unique beauty of the Témpanos Lagoon, whose water has a green tone due to the sediments and minerals discharged by the glacier. In addition, this area is part of a Ramsar Site, which makes it a key place for biodiversity and wetland conservation. If you trek during the thaw season, you may see ice formations near the lagoon, a true natural spectacle!

Mount Susanna

If you are looking for the best panoramic views of Ushuaia, Mount Susana is the ideal place. At 610 meters above sea level, the mountain is just 8 kilometers from the city center. The trail, which runs along the southeastern slope of the mountain, will take you through native forests where you can observe different species of flora and fauna, while you approach the natural viewpoints.

Upon reaching the top, you will enjoy a 360-degree view of Ushuaia and its surroundings. From there, you can see the Beagle Channel and its islets, the imposing Chilean mountain range to the south, and the dense forest of the Tierra del Fuego National Park to the west. Best of all, depending on the time of year, the landscape transforms: the warm colors of autumn, the winter snows or the spring flowers offer a unique experience each season.

Martial Glacier

The Martial Glacier is one of the most classic and accessible trails in Ushuaia, ideal for those looking for a low-demand but equally spectacular hike. This cirque glacier, formed by a natural depression in the mountain, offers an impressive landscape, especially in winter, when snow covers everything around it, creating a scene of unparalleled beauty.

The trail is almost all uphill until you reach the base of the glacier, and along the way you can make a stop at the Cañadón Negro Viewpoint, from where you will have a beautiful panoramic view of the city and the glacier. Just 7 kilometers from the center of Ushuaia, the Martial Glacier is perfect for a short but intense hike, ideal for all levels.
